IITB Monash Research Academy PhD Program
The IITB-Monash Research Academy is inviting applications for its prestigious PhD program for the upcoming December 2019 Intake. Students accepted in the IITB-Monash Ph.D. joint program will be based at the Research Academy co-located at IIT Bombay in Mumbai, India.
Duration of Ph.D.: 3.5 years of full-time research (or part-time equivalent) to finish the Ph.D. program. Students will spend at least 3 months but normally 6–12 months* of their Ph.D. research at Monash University in Australia with their assigned co-supervisor. To facilitate this experience, selected students will get a generous grant.

* The duration of time spent at the University of Monash can be extended based on research requirements.
Students in the joint IITB-Monash Ph.D. program will benefit from the following funding arrangements:
- Rs 372,000 per annum scholarship for the first two years
- Rs 420,000 per annum after the first two years
- A grant of up to A$25,850 per annum in Australia
A minimum of one year in Australia working with your Monash University co-supervisor, and waiver of international student tuition fees at Monash University.
Exceptionally talented students whose intended area of the research aligns with the research priorities of the IITB-Monash Research Academy are invited to apply for the Joint Ph.D. program.
The minimum entrance requirements for Ph.D. admission are:
- First-class or equivalent Master’s degree in a range of disciplines
- First-class Bachelor’s degree and a valid GATE score
Satisfying requirements of academic qualifications and English Language proficiency of Monash University.
Note: Candidates without a valid GATE score or research fellowship can be considered for admission if they have a minimum of two years of professional experience. Competition for places is high and a competitive selection process is applied to all applicants.
A team-based strategy will be used to conduct research. Multi-disciplinary research which will allow discoveries to be made at the interface of disciplines.
The Academy’s purpose is to organize research into classes of issues that are aimed at addressing a key research topic or sector goal. Eight key research themes have been identified:
- Biotechnology and Stem Cell Research
- Advanced Computational Engineering, Simulation and Manufacture
- Infrastructure Engineering
- Clean Energy
- Humanities and Social Sciences
Step 1: EOI
Expression of Interest (EOI) stage is the. In this stage the first step of the admissions process.
Please fill Expression of Interest (EOI) form, based on this form your background, academic record and research interests will be evaluated.
After evaluation, if found suitable, an email will be sent to you suggesting that you can proceed to the application stage.
The selected candidate will be requested to download and complete the full application form, Form A. After completing the EOI stage, the candidate will be invited to go Step-2.
Step 2: Form A
You will be notified via email if your EOI form is found to be suitable and you will get a unique FAN number, you will need this FAN number to upload FORM A online.
You will be required to upload your transcripts, publications, certificates, GATE score sheet, supporting documentation and make project selections too. Before you visit the site, it will be useful if you gather all the records related to your application.
Step 3: Short-listing for Interview
If your Form-A is found to be suitable, you will be informed via email and you will receive an interview invitation. The Interview short-list will be announced only after the Form-A stage is complete.
Step 4: Interviews and Successful Candidates
After the interviews, successful candidates will be notified by email.
